Start of Study Abroad and the Gilman Scholarship

Saturday, September 3, 2011

I’m a little late getting this first blog post up, because I’ve had some trouble getting internet at my living situation here in Florence. Luckily that’s fixed now. It’s all a part of the experience, right?

Here's an Italian fountain to make up for it:

It's sort of weird, isn't it? Looks like an Ent.

Anyway, I have safely made it to Florence, and am ready to embark on my adventure. Especially now that I have internet.

Down to business, this blog has two points: first it is my follow-on project for my Gilman Scholarship (more on this later), and second it exists to document my travels and keep me writing while abroad. Generally I will be posting every Friday while I am abroad this year. Once in a while, I may move the post to a Saturday if I have something to do on Friday, but either way it will be once a week.

Now, about Gilman: the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program promotes international study by providing scholarships for students to study abroad. I believe you must be an American college student studying abroad and either a current Pell Grant recipient or eligible for a Pell Grant. Unfortuantely, if you're not eligible for a Pell Grant, I don't think you can apply. However, if you are eligible for a Pell Grant and want to study abroad during your time at college, you should definitely look into the program. You can find the website (and more information) here: Gilman Scholarship.

If you have any questions about Gilman or studying abroad, please leave them in comments, and I will either answer them, or try to point you toward someone who can.
