Homemade Handkerchief

Monday, August 4, 2014

Embroidering handkerchiefs was one of the first projects I learned to do as a child. I started when I was about 8 or 9 years old, but eventually fell away from it as I got into junior high and high school. I recently picked it up again, this time adding the construction of the handkerchief itself to my repertoire (untrained 8 year old hands don't make a steady hem).

This first attempt took me about a week from start to finish, and overall I'm pretty happy with the result. I made it out of muslin, which I generally find cheaper and more effective (although less pretty) than linen. However, I did buy some linen at the fabric store, so hopefully I'll have a go with that material soon.

P.S. The hem is a slight variation on this beautiful method.
