Best Friending

This is my best friend:

Looking back on it, we must have met on our very first day of high school but I couldn't tell you any details from our first interactions. As fate would have it, we were in five classes together and through a combination of luck and alphabet we sat by each other in four of them. The rest, of course, is history.

Over eight years have passed since then, three of them spent on opposite sides of the US, not to mention the year we lived on separate continents. And yet, through a combination of Skype calls, handwritten letters, and holiday visits, our friendship survived college. I was thrilled when I realized that moving back to Texas meant we would be only a two hour drive away for the first time in four years.

Although we still see each other only once every month or two, there's a comfort in being so near. And of course we have big plans of being neighbors one day, of our kids growing up together, of being old ladies out to lunch. These plans still hang in an uncertain future, but finishing college seems to have breathed a life into them. Now, our outlandish wishes are interspersed with serious asides about years and timing and hope that we will continue best friending for many years to come.
