In the Garden // September 11

Thursday, September 11, 2014

My birthday is coming up and the new raised bed in my garden was the present I got from my dad. We spent a whole day playing hooky. We went to the store, bought everything, took it home, and put it all together (with breaks for birthday lunches and deserts in between, of course). It was a a lovely day. My father likes making things, a trait I inherited from him, and as a child I loved being in the garage while he worked on a project. I even made my own creations with the hammer and nails he gave me (mostly crosses made from of spare pieces of wood). Needless to say, we were both quite content with our day's work (What is it about drilling that makes it so satisfying?) and I have spent the last week enjoying my new plot of dirt.

Among our new additions are: more bush beans, broccoli (How is it possible it popped up in six days?), a small bell pepper plant, and various flowers to attract pollinators.

Of course the old additions are growing just as well. We've had our first harvest of three cucumbers, with several more growing happily on the vines. The bush beans took off and have begun to look, well, like bushes. They're struggling to set pods, unfortunately, probably because of the heat, but with temperatures dropping into the mid to high eighties next week, I'm hopeful they'll start producing. And the basil continues to grow like a weed no matter how many trims it gets.

    1. Thank you. Snow already? And I thought New York's winters were bad! I hope it's just a fluke and sunny days return for you soon.
