During our trip to Vienna last December (Can that have been five months ago?) we made it out of the city for one day. It was a particularly cold morning but as we bundled into our layers of wool coats, sweaters, boots, and hats I was feeling irrepressibly excited. The prospect of train journeys always makes me giddy. There's an air of adventure in traveling by rail.

We got to the platform early and found a spot by the windows to watch the scenery pass by. The further we got from the city the more Austria began to look like a winter wonderland. After two hours of scenery and chatting, we arrived in Melk.

Melk in December is like Christmas made living. The city is quiet and charming. We wandered to the river and then blew in to the warmth of a little cafe. The waitress spoke no English and we only a few words of German but with gestures and smiles we found ourselves with two huge portions of the best apple strudel I have ever tasted.

The rest of the day was given over to a tour of Melk Abbey, but that is a story for another day.

Have you been to Melk?

  1. What a lovely reminder of Melk! I love the view in the first photo. I spent a couple of days there around the same time of year, when it looked like a winter wonderland in the Danube Valley and it was so beautiful.

    1. Thank you! Melk is really enchanting isn't it?
