Most Beautiful Train Journeys: Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh

Saturday, August 20, 2016

We boarded our train to Kyle of Lochalsh from the small Inverness train station with high hopes for our five hour trip to the western coast of Scotland. Our travel guide promised us one of the most scenic train rides in the world. Obedient to its suggestions, we claimed seats on the right side of the train as soon as the platform number was posted.

Our window was absolutely covered in mud from its previous journey, which was simply unacceptable to me. Being the sort of hobby photographer that occasionally crosses the border into crazy, I dropped my stuff as soon as we chose seats and booked it to the outside portion of our window, water bottle and paper towels in hand. While my family laughed at me from inside the train, I diligently cleaned off the window as best I could with water and thin paper.

The conductor passed while I was working on my window and suggested I might do the rest of the train as well. What do we live for, but providing amusement to strangers?

Sometimes you just have to let go and embrace your inner crazy tourist.
